In our latest Pray on Location video, we revisit Istanbul—this time reflecting on the legacy of the Ottoman Empire, a powerful force that not only shaped Türkiye but left a deep impact across the Muslim world. While many churches were converted into mosques during this time, notably the Hagia Sofia, the Ottomans also practiced a notable degree of religious tolerance, allowing other faiths to self-govern under their traditions.
But history didn’t end there. Following the fall of the empire, Atatürk’s sweeping reforms transformed Türkiye into a modern secular republic—removing the fez, granting women the right to vote, modernizing the alphabet, and opening the door to new freedoms. These shifts represented a push toward Western alignment, though today, Türkiye seems pulled again toward the East.
